Suicide Prevention Day- September 10th

Advocating for Mental Health on Suicide Prevention Day

September 10th holds profound significance for me—it is Suicide Prevention Day and, coincidentally, my grandson’s birthday. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of mental health advocacy and suicide prevention, a cause that is deeply personal to me. In honor of my late son, Trevor (my grandson’s dad), whose art adorns this website and our merchandise, and who we lost to suicide, I want to share some simple yet impactful ways we can engage in this movement, focusing on our immediate circles and communities.

1. Share Your Story

Start by opening up and sharing your own experiences with mental health, whether through social media, a conversation with a friend, or within your family. Vulnerability can inspire others to be open about their struggles. Your story could provide comfort to someone in need, reminding them they are not alone.

 2. Check In on Loved Ones

You can make it a habit to regularly check in with your family, friends, and colleagues. A simple message, phone call, or coffee date can make all the difference. Ask how they’re really doing and listen without judgment. Creating a space for people to express themselves can help catch early signs of distress.

 3. Practice Kindness and Empathy

Small acts of kindness can have a huge impact. Whether it’s offering a compliment, providing a listening ear, or helping someone in need, showcasing empathy strengthens connections and creates a supportive atmosphere. Remember, kindness matters.

4. Create Safe Spaces for Conversations

Organize casual gatherings, like dinner nights, book clubs, or art sessions, where people can feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and feelings. By fostering an environment of trust and openness, you encourage meaningful dialogue about mental health within your immediate community.

5. Learn Together

Educate yourself and your family or friends about mental health and suicide prevention. Watch films or documentaries, read books, or attend workshops together. The more you understand, the better equipped you will be to support one another and recognize when someone might need help.

6.  Advocate for Policy Change

While focusing on immediate connections, we can’t forget the bigger picture. Join local initiatives that push for better mental health policies in schools and workplaces. Support legislation that improves access to mental health care and resources, and use your voice to speak out on these critical issues.

Breathe for Trevor

Trevor found himself in a moment of hopelessness and pain so intense that he felt he could not take another breath. If you ever find yourself feeling the same, I urge you to stay and breathe for my son, Trevor, until you can breathe for yourself again. Your life matters, and there is hope even in the darkest times. Reach out, speak up, and let someone support you through your struggles.
