21 Jun Breathe Deep To Manage Stress
As a mother who has lost my son to suicide, I know firsthand the devastating impact that depression can have on both the individual and their loved ones. Although there is no single solution to this complex issue, I have found that learning to breathe intentionally can be a powerful tool in managing depression and preventing suicide.
For many of us, breathing is something we take for granted. We do it automatically, without really thinking about it. But when we learn to breathe intentionally, we can tap into the power of our breath to calm our mind and body, reduce stress, and improve our overall well-being.
Studies have shown that deep breathing can help to lower cortisol levels, the hormone associated with stress, and increase serotonin levels, the hormone associated with happiness and well-being. By taking slow, deep breaths in and long breaths out, we can activate the parasympathetic nervous system, which is responsible for the body’s relaxation response.
In addition to its physical benefits, intentional breathing can also help quiet the mind, reduce negative thoughts and help us allow those thoughts to pass when they arise. By focusing on our breath, we become more present in the moment (Mindfulness) and let go of worries about the past or future.
For anyone struggling with depression, learning to breathe intentionally can be a powerful tool for managing symptoms and preventing suicide. By incorporating breathing exercises into your daily routine, it’s possible to develop a greater sense of self-awareness and learn to recognize when you’re feeling overwhelmed or anxious.
From my experience practicing and teaching intentional breathing, I believe it to be a powerful tool for managing depression and preventing suicide. By taking the time to focus on your breath and quieten your mind, you can develop a greater sense of peace and well-being, and ultimately help prevent the loss of precious lives.
If you are struggling with suicidal thoughts, please reach out for help. You are not alone. And if you feel that you cannot take another breath, please stop and do it for my Sonshine Trevor, until you can breathe for you again.
